Growing up in a Norwegian/English-speaking household there may have been Norwegian words I couldn't translate into English, but I certainly understood what they meant. It led to a love of language, words, and the sounds various letters and letter combinations make in different languages. I think it also made it easier for me to learn French and Italian because I was open to different pronunciations and letter combinations. The richness and beauty of a world of multiple languages needs to be nurtured, not sanitized.
